I

I pledge allegiance...
I...
The call to commitment is very radical and very personal call to rally around the cause of freedom, to consciously individuate my commitment at the very core of my own identity.
I... This is a very personal pronoun.
Not we, not you, not they... but I.
I is in the first person singular. Seems appropriate that the first word of the pledge of commitment that I recite to my country -to my flag- is in the first person singular form.

pledge...

Etched upon our lives as a critical part of our heritage an indelible impression of our integrity-- a solemn vow-- a promise that we would be faithful to our flag, yes even unto death, if death it did require.
